Senior Software Engineer, Backend
Series A AI-native healthcare tech, NYC
About the role
This is backend product engineering, not integrations-only, not AI-first, and not DevOps or data engineering. The environment is Python-heavy on AWS with high-volume document and event processing, SFTP ingestion, OCR, orchestration, queues, and retries. AI is a component of the product, not the center of your career. The CTO runs a live coding round, so this is for someone still writing code every day. Top of the Senior band or early Staff, roughly four to nine years, backend-focused.
What you will own
- Backend service design and production system ownership, from design through production.
- Event-driven and asynchronous systems: queues, retries, idempotency, backoff, dead-letter handling, state management.
- APIs, integration-heavy systems, data modeling, and transactions.
- Document and high-volume processing reliability, observability, and performance.
What we are looking for
- Four to nine years of backend-focused engineering, still hands-on and coding daily.
- Has owned production systems and can take a backend feature or service end to end with limited oversight.
- Strong Python and/or Go preferred; pragmatic polyglots welcome. Ruby is in the environment but not required.
- Healthtech or medtech startup experience strongly preferred; document, OCR, fintech, EDI, or workflow-automation startups a close second.
- Can pass a live coding round.
Nice to have
- Founding engineer or senior/staff IC background at a Series A to C startup, ideally NYC metro.
