Forward Deployed Engineer
Venture-backed applied AI company, early stage, NYC
About the role
You will embed inside a firm the company has acquired, sit beside civil, structural, and MEP engineers, and build the software, automation, and AI that changes how they work. The CTO scopes you to a problem and a group of users, then trusts your judgment on how much time on site it takes to learn the work and earn trust before returning to New York to build. You own the engagement from discovery through production and beyond. The users are licensed professionals who have often never worked with a technology company. This is not implementation consulting, customer success, or pre-sales. You are a strong hands-on engineer who also genuinely enjoys sitting with users and working through unclear requirements.
What you will own
- Embedding on site with engineers to understand real workflows and earn trust with people who are experts at something other than software.
- Deployments end to end: discovery, scoping, building, shipping, production debugging, adoption, and iteration.
- Shipping useful tools in weeks, then turning one-off solutions into reusable platform capability.
- Applied AI against real unstructured documents: drawings, specifications, calculations, reports.
- Scrapers, browser automation, document processing, internal tools, and integrations with legacy Windows-native AEC software.
What we are looking for
- Three or more years of professional software engineering, with three to five as the target range.
- Has owned a feature, integration, or implementation from initial discovery through production.
- Has worked directly with users or customers to figure out what to build, not just received a spec.
- Excellent communication, high EQ, high agency, low ego, and real energy.
- Willing to be on-site in NYC five days a week and travel to acquired firms (roughly Monday to Thursday every other week early in a deployment).
Nice to have
- Prior forward deployed, applied AI, product, or solutions engineering experience.
- Founding or early engineer who shipped across the whole stack.
- Experience with LLMs, agent frameworks, RAG, browser automation, or document parsing, and strong Python.
- Background in engineering, architecture, construction tech, or CAD/BIM before moving into software.
