Principal Software Engineer, Backend Architecture

About the role
This is senior technical leadership focused on backend architecture, distributed systems, and scalability, for someone who has spent years building and owning large-scale backend platforms in high-growth environments. It is not an infrastructure, DevOps, data engineering, or AI research seat. AI is a feature of the systems you will build, not the center of your career. The CTO evaluates for system design from first principles, sound long-term architecture decisions, how systems behave under growth, and real ownership.
What you will own
- Backend architecture and long-term platform evolution, including breaking monoliths into services.
- High-volume transaction and event-driven systems, asynchronous processing, fault tolerance, and performance.
- New platform capabilities and scaling existing ones, end to end.
- Technical direction across the engineering team.
What we are looking for
- Repeatedly built and owned large-scale, business-critical backend systems at high-growth SaaS, fintech, healthtech, logistics, marketplace, or communications companies.
- Deep systems design and architectural judgment, and can clearly explain what you personally owned, the tradeoffs, and the failures.
- Still hands-on. Architecture experience matters more than language; Ruby is in the environment but not required.
- Pragmatic, product-minded, comfortable in ambiguity.
Nice to have
- Healthcare integrations, EMR/EHR, document processing, or communications platforms.
